1 Hour Trainings

This training provides a comprehensive overview of the Customer Service Standard under Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). It equips employees, volunteers, and service providers with practical guidance on interacting respectfully and effectively with people of all types of disabilities, including those who use assistive devices, service animals, or support persons. There are two modules that are required by volunteers: Customer Service Standard and General Requirements.

This course explores the adolescent brain and its connection to behaviour and emotional regulation. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of brain development during adolescence and how it influences common behaviours. This knowledge supports the development of practical skills for effectively engaging and working with youth.

This training provides practical, culturally responsive tools to support the mental health of Black, Indigenous, and 2SLGBTQIA+ youth. It explores inclusive approaches to engagement, strengthens skills for meaningful mental health conversations, and emphasizes self-care to support well-being throughout this work. Please note that volunteers are not required to watch the Q&A portion of the presentation, but we do recommend it. You will not be quizzed on this part of the webinar.

This workshop focuses on creating equitable, inclusive spaces that support the meaningful participation, leadership, and advocacy of Black youth. It offers strategies for building strong, supportive relationships with Black youth and their families, while deepening understanding of parenting in the context of historical and intergenerational trauma. Participants will also learn how to ally with Black youth as co-leaders and collaborators by distinguishing between practice-based mental health support and ally-based approaches that center youth voice and lived experience.

The Mental Health 101 Series provides foundational knowledge on key mental health topics. Volunteers will need to complete three modules: Addiction 101, Depression 101, Mental Health 101. Each module introduces core concepts, risk factors, and strategies for support and prevention. After completing a module you will receive a badge to submit as proof. You must submit all three badges to receive full credit. Once you have registered, you can click the links below to access each module. You will be asked to provide the name of the organization you belong to – please use BGC Durham.

This course provides a clear, interactive overview of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) and how Canada’s youth justice system works. It covers key topics such as youth rights, extrajudicial measures, sentencing, and youth records, helping learners understand why youth are treated differently from adults in the justice system.

2-3 Hour Trainings

This session invites participants to shift from a trauma-informed approach that focuses solely on individual harm to a healing-centered practice that nurtures resilience, possibility, and collective well-being for young people and their communities. Participants will gain an understanding of how trauma affects youth and explore how healing-centered engagement can build stronger relationships, promote empowerment, and enhance the impact of their work.

This course introduces participants to the impact of adverse childhood experiences on lifelong health and wellbeing. Participants will learn to identify different types of ACEs, understand their short- and long-term effects, and recognize risk factors that increase vulnerability.

This introductory module presents information about unique characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including social-communication, restricted interests and patterns of behavior, sensory, cognition and information processing, and emotional regulation. Five simple strategies are introduced that may be used anytime, anywhere with young children, students, and adults with ASD.

This course introduces trauma informed care for those working with youth, explaining what trauma is and how it impacts brain development, learning, and behaviour. It also focuses on practical strategies, including building safety and strong relationships, to help youth workers effectively support young people who have experienced trauma.

This workshop explores the transformative power of Anti-Oppressive Practice frameworks in youth work. Through a series of engaging lectures, participants will examine topics such as anti-Black racism, Indigenous worldviews, Islamophobia and its impact on youth, and supporting LGBTQ+ youth. Participants will also learn practical strategies to help young people recognize, question, and challenge systemic oppression and structural barriers in their lives and communities.

This is an online foundational training for anyone working with children, youth, and families affected by trauma. Through five self-paced modules, participants will gain a basic understanding of childhood maltreatment, the impact of trauma on brain development and behavior, and the principles of trauma-informed practice. The course can be completed individually or in groups, and a certificate is provided upon completion. This training serves as an essential first step toward deeper learning in trauma-informed care.

The Be There Certificate is a learning experience designed to increase mental health literacy and build confidence in safely supporting someone who may be struggling with their mental health. It teaches a practical framework called the 5 Golden Rules that helps participants recognize signs someone may be struggling, understand their role in offering support, and connect the person to appropriate help and resources.

Youth are globally recognized as key agents of change, and with their increasing numbers, providing the right guidance is more important than ever. This course is designed to empower individuals passionate about supporting youth, offering insights into building positive relationships, mental health, education, and effective youth development programs. This will take 3-4 hours to complete and requires registration.

Points:  20 total: 10 per year, with up to 10 carried over.

While it was originally designed for young people, it is highly valuable for anyone working with youth, helping volunteers recognize early signs of concern and respond in a safe, informed, and compassionate way.
